A Job Seeker’s Guide to the Facebook Timeline

You’ve heard it already, but it bears repeating: Timeline is coming.

In the next few weeks, Facebook plans to roll out the Timeline to every single Facebook user (that’s 800 million folks!)

Whether you jumped on the Timeline bandwagon a long time ago or you’re holding out until the last minute, there are some important things you need to know

What is the Facebook Timeline?

For those of you not in the know, Facebook Timeline “is the new virtual space in which all the content of every Facebook user will be organized and shown.

Replacing the Facebook Profile, in a Timeline the photos, videos, and posts of any given user will be categorized according to the period of time in which they were uploaded or created, in this way providing a more intuitive and comprehensible way to navigate through them.”

How is Timeline going to be different?

Facebook users should keep in mind that Timeline is going to have the same exact information that their prior profile has, it’s just organized differently. Your privacy settings will remain the same, but your old content will become a lot more accessible. With the Timeline, you can also feature specific content and you’ll have the opportunity to feature one picture you like as your cover image.

What does this mean for my job search?

While many are resisting this new feature, the Timeline can mean a lot of good things for job seekers:

Tell a more complete story

Now that your old content is a lot more accessible, you’ll be able to tell the people who visit your page a more complete story about you. To networking contacts and potential employers, your professional history is intermingled with the content you share.

Better branding

Now that you can tell a more consistent, complete story, your branding efforts on Facebook are going to be a lot more effective. You and your visitors will be able to pull the themes and brand you’re working on throughout.

App it up

The Timeline is a lot more app-friendly. If you’re active on Pinterest, Netflix, or Cachinko (we know you are), you’ll be able to show off your participation better on the Timeline.
